PCB fabrication is the manufacture of a bare PCB board. PCB assembly is the process of mounting and soldering components onto a bare PCB board.

Through-hole components are inserted with their legs passing through the holes in the PCB.The component legs may have to be pre-bent and cut first. The height of the leaded component above the surface of the PCB may have to be adjusted because not all components sit flush.The legs of the component are soldered either by hand, by selective soldering machine, or by wave soldering. Depending on the soldering process, component legs will be cropped either before or after.

Surface mounted devices (SMD) are machine-placed flat onto pre-solder pasted pads. The solder paste is reflowed either by infra-red, convection, or a vapour phase reflow oven. SMD components may be hand soldered with a soldering iron, but this is a laborious and low-quality method. Components with pads underneath the body of the device cannot be soldered by hand.

Leaded parts, which are now favoured less and less, are often placed by hand because the machines built to place leaded parts are long since obsolete. SMD parts are usually placed by pick and place machines, many of which can place 10s of thousands of parts per hour. SMD components may be placed by hand if the quantities are very small.

Solder paste, which has the consistency of butter, is screen printed onto the component pads on the surface of a PCB.

A typical run of 50 PCBs with 100 components on each may only be running on the pick-and-place machine for around 1 hour to place and reflow all the components. However,this all depends on part availability and it may take a week to receive all the parts after placing orders with suppliers. Checking and kitting in parts, programming the SMD machine, cutting the solder paste screen, and fitting the component reels onto the trolleys which fit the SMD placement machines will add more days to the process. Before a batch of assemblies is run on the SMD machines, a first-off is produced and thoroughly checked. Any error would be reproduced 50 times over.
